First World Series

The first World Series game in major league history took place on October 1, 1903, as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Boston Red Sox 7-3 before 16,200 fans. The game also saw the first home run in series play. The Red Sox went on to win the series, five games to two. This year's will be the 106th World Series, scheduled to begin the 27th of this month. Unlike recent years, the NFL has scheduled a game Sunday evening between the Steelers and the Saints in New Orleans -- opposite the fourth game of the World Series. Baseball draws nearly 80 million spectators each year to its games -- about 220,000 attend the World Series.
