VCR: Videocassette Recorder

One of the mainstays of modern home entertainment in the 1980s and 90s, was the VCR. Sony brought out the first VCR in the betamax format. Watching movies at home — either rented or bought — along with those shot on trips and family events, soon became a very popular pastime. After a bruising marketplace battle, the Video Home System — or VHS — became the standard. Sales of VCRs peaked in 1996.
