One of the mainstays of modern home entertainment in the 1980s and 90s, was the VCR. Sony brought out the first VCR in the betamax format. Watching movies at home — either rented or bought — along with those shot on trips and family events, soon became a very popular pastime. After a bruising marketplace battle, the Video Home System — or VHS — became the standard. Sales of VCRs peaked in 1996.
